PUBLIC TRANSPORT AUTHORITY OF NSW.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

IN RESPECT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN
INTEGRATED TICKETING SYSTEM FOR
PUBLIC PASSENGER SERVICES IN THE
SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA

OCTOBER 1997

CURRENT ARRANGEMENTS:

Transport in Sydney and the surrounding regions is provided by a mix of Government and privately owned and operated services. Broadly, one third of the transport network is catered for by rail, another third by Government owned buses and ferries and the remaining third by private sector operators (predominantly bus). Ownership is diverse in the private bus industry where approximately 40 separate companies currently co-exist. Schedule 1 provides a summary of the types of ticketing systems and devices that are currently used by operators.

Currently, CityRail (SRA), STA and SLR are operating on magnetic stripe technology, with common protocols, standardised encoding specifications and associated business rules. In view of the large capital investment and remaining economic life, and unless alternatives are identified by the EOI, magnetic stripe technology is seen as the core technology for SRA, STA, and SLR for the next few years

Other public transport operators are using a variety of technologies and perceive that the next logical step for them is to go from these various technologies directly to contactless stored value smart card technology (SVC).

Public Transport is seen as providing a necessary critical mass to make the implementation of smart card technology a viable business proposition to card operators and all operators are open to the proposals that will accelerate the introduction of these technologies.
