PUBLIC TRANSPORT AUTHORITY OF NSW.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

IN RESPECT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN
INTEGRATED TICKETING SYSTEM FOR
PUBLIC PASSENGER SERVICES IN THE
SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA

OCTOBER 1997

NEW DEVELOPMENTS:

Given the diversity of systems in operation across public transport all operators agree that options accommodating the various technologies should be considered which would lead to the adoption of contactless stored value smart cards incorporating electronic purse and ticketing plus loyalty schemes for the public transport industry. Despite the recent acceleration of developments in smart card technology, it is anticipated that its acceptance and roll out will be staged over the next few years and there will be a need for the interoperability of both the magnetic and smart card technology for some time.

The introduction of smart card technology into the Sydney market will require STA, SRA and SLR and some other operators to consider appending smart card readers to existing equipment. Within the Bus and Coach Association (BCA) some operators have been trialing smart card technology in anticipation that they will be able to undertake the technological leap from paper tickets directly to smart cards.

Smart cards incorporating electronic purse, payment schemes, loyalty schemes and electronic ticketing are seen as providing an opportunity to develop new and exciting integrated products outside the scope of current thinking. Such opportunities exist for transport operators to combine with organisers of major events and attractions.

However any move towards the early adoption of smart card technology, needs to recognise the need to not only protect the current investments in Automatic Fare Collection systems, but to also provide an orderly, cost effective upgrade path which will ensure the interoperability of the various technologies.

The transport modes to be incorporated in the overall integration initiative include:

  • SRA
  • STA Bus
  • STA Ferry
  • Private Sector Bus
  • Private Sector Ferry
  • Sydney Light Rail
  • Private Sector Rail (eg. New Southern Railway)

A link with taxi industry payment systems is also seen as beneficial.
