PUBLIC TRANSPORT AUTHORITY OF NSW.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

IN RESPECT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN
INTEGRATED TICKETING SYSTEM FOR
PUBLIC PASSENGER SERVICES IN THE
SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA

OCTOBER 1997

PURPOSE:

The Public Transport Authority of New South Wales ("PTA"), as part of its long term strategy to develop a fully integrated transport ticketing platform for Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, invites expressions of interest from interested parties to further develop, a cost effective solution for processing pre-paid or stored value tickets on all public transport modes in the Sydney Metropolitan Area.

The PTA also seeks from interested parties innovative approaches to the goal of integrated ticketing for Sydney’s public transport providers which will minimise the overall impact of capital investment on all transport operators.

An integrated ticketing system is defined as:

"a system which recognises tickets which satisfies the customer’s transport needs irrespective of the mode or operators used."

The objectives to be achieved by integrating the ticketing system element of public passenger services are to:

  • make multi-modal journeys easier for passengers

  • provide the convenience of using a single ticket to travel anywhere on the system regardless of the transport mode or vehicle ownership

  • permit further integration of all public transport modes

  • allow attractions, events and ancillary services to dove-tail their retailing with the broader transport system

  • reduce public transport journey times through less fare collection

  • permit more efficient use of the public transport network
