The Motor Vessel "NORTH HEAD" (formerly known as the S.S. "BARRENJOEY") shown here with the lighthouse at Bradleys Head in the foreground.
She was built as a double-ended coad fired steamer by Morts Dock & Engineering Co. Ltd. in Dydney in 1913. The vessel was converted to Diesel-Electric propulsion in 1951.
M.V. "NORTH HEAD" has a unique record in that she has made the ocean voyage on a number of occassions to and from Melbourne to operate Bay Excursions within Port Phillip.
Technical Details of this vessel are as follows: Steel construction, length 210ft., beam 32ft., draught 12ft., and 499 tons gross. Propulsion 4 supercharged, English Electric, Diesel Generators each 500 B.H.P., supplying power to two Electric Motors and through a 5 to 1 reduction gear box to a shaft and propellor at each end of the vessel. Speed of vessel 16 knots.
"NORTH HEAD" is certified to carry 1,287 passengers. The hull is of double ended construction with a propeller and rudder fitted at both ends. This enables the vessel to attain full speed in either direction and it is not necessary to turn the vessel around at Terminal wharves. The master has direct control of all engine movements from the bridge of the vessel.
All Manly Ferries are equipped with V.H.F. Radio-Telephone and are in direct communication with the Sydney Terminal.
